Robots in 360°

We are very excited about a new project to begin next week – 360° photography of robots. This has been something I personally have wanted to have the opportunity to work on for a while now. Some of our subjects are purely research models, others are already in commercial use. We’ve been doing some homework to undersand more about this world and it’s been eye opening. There’s a whole open source community among researchers in both private companies and academic institutions allowing for faster development through sharing of information. The potential applications of these robots are unlimited and it’s only a matter of time before we all benefit from these machines in our daily life.

Flipside Spins Specialized Bikes

Once in a while we get the opportunity and challenge to photograph a uniquely designed and beautiful product. We recently got this opportunity when Specialized Bicycles worked with Flipside to produce an interactive 360 degree product spin of their amazing new road bike, Venge. The 360 demo features high resolution zooming for very clear, close up details of the bike’s features. Scene 7, Adobe’s rich media provider, created the website interface using Flipside’s images. As soon as we finished out photoshoot, the bike was off to Italy for a demo. Click here and then the small “360″ icon to see the spin on their site.

Google chooses Flipside to shoot first product photos of new Chrome Notebook

Google today unveiled their long-awaited new Cr-48 Notebook computer that uses Chrome OS, and Flipside is honored that Google chose us to shoot the very first public images of this product. We were contacted just 3 weeks before the product launch date and asked to shoot a series of beauty shots of the new device for the rapidly-approaching release date of December 7th. We were able to fit in the photoshoot that same week and – pulling our resources together for rush post production – we were able to deliver final retouched images to Google in only 3 days. We are happy to report that Google was very pleased with the results and our rapid turnaround. Click here to see our photos!

John Greenleigh featured in new VR Photography book

The wonderful new book, Virtual Reality Photography by Scott Highton, features John Greenleigh as one of the innovators and leaders in 360° object photography. In the book, I talk about issues of lighting, QTVR compression, and Flash or QTVR delivery options. Scott’s book is by far the most comprehensive and up to date guide to creating interactive photographic content – both panoramas and product rotations.

Scott and I have both been creating interactive content since Apple first developed the technology in the mid 90s. Scott has been focused (no pun intended) primarily on panoramic content, while I have been incorporating my product photography background into the new 360° interactive produce display technologies. Autumn light is here

Nothing in outdoor photography inspires me more than the warm, rich, low in the sky sunlight that comes with the fall season. The sun remains low in the sky throughout the day, providing photographers with long shadows, strong textures, and extraordinary warm toned light early and late in the day. More on this to come in the new blog.

Google Chrome OS Notebook

Project: Google chose Flipside to shoot the product photos for the launch of their Chrome OS notebook. The images are used on the Chrome OS web site, and also appeared in hundreds of blogs and articles covering the launch.
